WINNIPEG, Manitoba – The St. Scholastica football team wrapped up its spring season on Sunday with a 31-9 victory over the Football Manitoba All-Stars in the second annual Can-Am Bowl at Blue Bomber Stadium.

The Saints sent over 50 players on the trip and all saw significant playing time in the game. Running back #Travis Nehowig# (Fr.-Maple Grove, Minn.) was named the team's Most Valuable Player of the game. #Tyler Olson# (Fr.-Washburn, Wis.) also caught a touchdown pass in the victory.

CSS's opponent, Football Manitoba All-Stars, is a collection of the best players from the Manitoba Major Football League. The league consists of six teams that play in the fall.

Prior to the game on Sunday, the Saints held a youth football camp. Over 40 kids, ages 8-12, participated in the camp with CSS players showing them the intricacies of football.

“The parents of the campers were very complimentary of our team,” head coach Greg Carlson said. “The trip was a great experience for all of our players and I think it is something that they will always remember.”

The team got to stay at a hotel, which included an indoor water park, right across the street from the 30,000-seat Blue Bomber Stadium. “Everything was done in a first class way,” said Carlson.

Coach Carlson thought the whole spring season was very beneficial for the team. Carlson said that once they started two-a-day practices after finals were over the team did not have a bad session.

“We as coaches got a great read on a lot of players, which would have taken a couple of weeks during preseason training camp in the fall,” Carlson said. “I think we are at least a week ahead of schedule when we start again in August.”

The Saints will open their 2010 campaign on Saturday, September 4th at Public Schools Stadium when they host Lawrence University (Wis.)
