HANCOCK, Mich. – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team picked up back-to-back victories and its first Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) series sweep with a 3-1 win on Sunday afternoon over Finlandia University.
The Saints (4-7-1, 3-6-1 NCHA) scored their first goal seven minutes into the game when #Briana Stephens# put up her second goal within 20 hours and her third of the season. #Briget Cojocar# and #Kristen Kilian# had the assists.
The Lions (0-8-0, 0-6-0 NCHA) tied the game with nine minutes to go in the second period on a Kelly Poelstra even-strength goal. It was just the third goal scored all season by Finlandia.
#Libby Guzzo# broke the tie two minutes later on the power-play with her second goal in as many games. #Jana Henry# and #Kiana Leisz# assisted the goal.
After CSS out-shot them 29-12 through the first two periods, Finlandia would out-shoot the Saints in the third period 10-8, but #Rachel Borchardt# stopped all 10 shots and #Stephanie Lenz# scored her first collegiate goal with 11:47 remaining to make the final score 3-1. #Michelle Fischer# had the assist.
Rachel Borchardt (Willow River, Minn./Willow River HS ) improved to 4-6, saving 21 shots. Ashley Pavlish had 34 saves in the loss for the Lions. Both teams had five penalties for 10 minutes.
The Saints will be off until after the Holidays and will resume action on January 7th when they take part in the Buffalo Tournament at the Buffalo Civic Center. The Saints will open with Saint Anselm College at 8 p.m.
