Saints Put Five on Finlandia in Series Opener

HANCOCK, Mich. – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team scored three first period goals en route to a 5-0 victory over Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) rival Finlandia University on Saturday evening.

The Saints improve to 3-7-1 on the season with the victory (2-6-1 NCHA). The Lions remain winless on the season at 0-7-0.

 #Brenna Flatley# got the Saints on the board just 1:53 into the game with a powerplay tally assisted by #Libby Guzzo#. 

Just over seven minutes later, Guzzo finally broke through for her first goal of the season with an assist from #Angela Schlieske#.

Shortly after the 16 minute mark, #Briana Stephens# netted her second of the season to put the Saints up 3-0. #Briget Cojocar# remains the Saints' season scoring leader as she earned the assist.

CSS out-shot the Lions 27-7 through the first two frames despite being held scoreless in the second. In the third, CSS peppered FU goalie Stephanie LaMore with 10 more shots including two more goals for a 5-0 final.

#Jordan Klimek# put the Saints up 4-0 shortly before the 15-minute mark of the third with an assist from #Alana Levido#. Just over two minutes later, #Kristen Kilian# netted her second of the season with assists from Cojocar and Stephens to close the scoring.

#Rachel Borchardt# earned the victory in net for the Saints, stopping all 13 shots by the Lions. LaMore finished with 32 saves on 37 CSS shots.

The Saints finished one-for-seven on the powerplay with 14 shots while the Lions finished scoreless in two opportunities. The Lions had eight penalties for 27 minutes while the Saints had just three for six minutes.

The Saints and Lions return for round two of the weekend series tomorrow afternoon to conclude the Saints schedule until the turn of the calendar to 2011. The puck will drop at 2 p.m. local time.
