DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team suffered its first-ever defeat on Sunday afternoon, falling to Concordia College-Moorhead 5-4 at Mars Lakeview Arena.
The Saints (1-1-0) got off to a great start with #Briget Cojocar# giving CSS a 1-0 lead just two minutes into the game. #Briana Stephens# and #Stephanie Lepak# had the assists. Later in the period, #Jana Henry# added her second goal in as many games at the 11:20-mark to make it 2-0. #Michelle Rebeck# had the assist.
The Cobbers (4-1-0) got on the board with two minutes to go when Katelyn Dold scored on the power-play. St. Scholastica responded with 48 seconds left in the period on a #Brenna Flatley# goal. #Libby Guzzo# was credited with the assist to make the score 3-1 at the first intermission.
Six minutes into the second period, the Cobbers' Katelyn Dold added another power-play goal to make it 3-2. Then short-handed 2:13 seconds later Abby Taffe scored a short-handed goal to tie it at 3-3. Taffe gave the Cobbers the lead 25 seconds after that to make it 4-3.
Kit Hollway's goal with 8:53 on the clock made it 5-3. The Saints cut the margin to one with about five minutes to go when
Brenna Flatley (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka HS) scored her second on the day, the first power-play goal in program history. #Kiana Leisz# and #Stephanie Lenz# had the assists.
The Saints out-shot the Cobbers 10-8 in the third period and got four power-play opportunities, but could not convert as the Cobbers hung on for the 5-4 victory.
CSS had the edge in shots for the game at 29-23. #Kat Lydon# started the game for the Saints and had seven saves. #Rachel Borchardt# came in to replace Lydon and had 11 saves, but picked up the loss. Casey Fiore had 21 saves off the bench to earn the win for the Cobbers.
The Saints will play their first-ever Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) game on Tuesday when they play the team from across the bridge in UW-Superior. The action is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Wessman Arena.
