FIRST HALF SHOOTING STRUGGLES HURT SAINTS WOMEN IN LOSS

ST. PAUL – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team scored just 12 points in the first half today as it fell at Northwestern College 50-43 at the Ericksen Center.

The Saints fall to a record of 8-15 overall and 5-7 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). The Eagles improve to 11-12 overall and 9-3 in the conference. The Saints remain in fifth place in the conference with two games left. The top six teams make it to the UMAC postseason tournament.

CSS scored the first points of the game on a #Laura Amys# (Fr.-South Range, Wis./Superior) lay-up at the 19:12-mark of the first half. However, the Saints would not score another basket until there was 5:22 remaining in the half and during that span the Eagles scored 19 points. The Saints did cut the lead to 20-12 before the half, but Northwestern went to the locker room with a 22-12 lead.

CSS shot just 14-percent in the half, while the Eagles shot 30-percent. Northwestern had 28 rebounds and St. Scholastica grabbed 17 boards in the first 20 minutes.

The Saints began the second half on a 7-1 run to cut the lead to four. A #Katie Christensen# (Jr.-Elk River, Minn.) jumper with 15 minutes to go cut it down to 28-25. Later in the half, the Eagles went on a 7-0 run and grew the margin back up to 12 with seven minutes to play. The Saints responded with an 8-0 run to make the score 41-37 with 4:29 remaining. However, that is as close as CSS would get as the Eagles hung on to win 50-43.

The Saints shot 41-percent in the second half to finish at 29-percent for the game. The Eagles shot 33-percent from the field for the game. Northwestern had a 50-33 advantage on the glass.

#Kirsten Haukom# (Jr.-Marshall, Minn.) and Laura Amys (South Range, Wis./Superior HS) both had 11 points to lead the Saints. Haukom also had a team-high seven rebounds. Katie DeWitt had 14 points to pace the Eagles.

The Saints return to Duluth next weekend for its final two regular season games of the season. The Saints will host Bethany Lutheran College on Friday night at Reif Gym with the tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
