DULUTH, Minn. – The seventh-ranked St. Scholastica hockey team began 2009 just like it ended 2008 with a 6-2 victory tonight over Northland College at Mars Lakeview Arena.
The Saints improve to 10-3-1, which matches last season's win total and is the best start since the 1981-82 season. CSS has also won six straight games, which is the longest streak since the 1985-86 season. The LumberJacks fall to 1-11-0 overall.
St. Scholastica got the scoring started three minutes into the contest when #Aaron Spotts# (Jr.-Spokane, Wash.) put the puck in the net. #Matt Saler# (Sr.-Minnedosa, Man.) had the assist. #Jeremy Dawes# (Fr.-Winnipeg, Man.) then scored a power-play goal with three minutes left in the period. #Joey Martini# (Sr.-Calgary, Alta.) and #Matt Stengl# (Sr.-East Grand Forks, Minn.) had the assists. Spotts added his second goal of the period 55 seconds later to make the score 3-0 at the first intermission. Matt Saler (Minnedosa, Manitoba/Powell River (BCHL)) and #Kyle Luschinski# (Sr.-Headingley, Man.) assisted on the goal. CSS had 17 shots on goal, while the LumberJacks did not have any shots on net in that first period.
Martini gave the Saints a 4-0 lead six minutes into the second period. Jeremy Dawes (Winnipeg, Manitoba/College Jeanne Suave (Portage-MJHL) ) and #Jordan Baird# (Jr.-Port McNeill, B.C.) had the assists. Then halfway through the second period, #Trevor Geiger# (Sr.-Salmon Arm, B.C.) scored a power-play goal for his team-high ninth of the season to make the score 5-0. After Northland got on the scoreboard with a power-play goal, the Saints responded when Jordan Baird (Port McNeill, British Columbia/Victoria (BCHL)) netted his second goal of the season to make it 6-1 at the second intermission. Dawes and #Neil Sauter# (Jr.-Superior, Wis.) had the assists.
The LumberJacks scored a goal in the third period to make the final score 6-2 CSS. In his first start of the season #Zach Kleiman# (Jr.-Ottawa, Ont.) had four saves to earn the win. #Brennan Poderzay# (Fr.-Tower, Minn.) also saw action, making five saves. Daniel McIntosh had 39 saves in the loss for the LumberJacks. The Saints out-shot the LumberJacks 45-11.
The Saints will be on the road next weekend for a pair of critical games against Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opponents St. Olaf College and Gustavus Adolphus College. Both of those teams are currently receiving votes in the latest USCHO.com poll. The Saints and the Oles will begin at 7 p.m. Friday at Northfield Ice Arena.
