EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team scored the first basket of the night, but unfortunately that was its only lead as the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire defeated the Saints 76-66 at Zorn Arena.
The Saints have now lost four straight games and have a record of 4-7. The Blugolds improve to an 8-3 record. CSS is 0-11 all-time against the Blugolds.
#Jesse Taylor# (Sr.-Superior, Wis./Maranatha Academy) hit a lay-up for the first points of the game to put CSS up 2-0. Eau Claire then scored the next seven consecutive points to go up five. The score was 13-12 Blugolds until UWEC's Geoff Probst scored the next six points to extend the Eau Claire lead to 19-12. The largest lead of the half would be the halftime score as the Saints trailed 46-32.
The Saints shot 48-percent from the field in the half and were 6-for-7 from the free throw line. The Blugolds shot 55-percent from the field and were 9-for-9 from the free throw line. Eau Claire doubled-up St. Scholastica in the paint 24-12.
The Blugolds extended their lead to 16 with 16 minutes to play in the second half, but the Saints went on a 13-4 run cut the lead to 54-47 halfway through the second half. However, the Blugolds climbed the lead back up to double-figures and it would remain there the rest of the way as Eau Claire defeated the Saints 76-66.
CSS shot 46-percent from the field for the game and was 9-for-11 from the free throw line. The Blugolds shot just 45-percent for the game and made 12 more free throws than the Saints.
The Saints had four players score in double-figures with #Bryan Johnson# (Fr.-Randolph, Wis.) leading the way with 12 points. #Troy Miller# (Sr.-Stillwater, Minn.) had 11 points and Jesse Taylor (Superior, Wis./Maranatha Academy) and #Danny Schmitz# (So.-Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson) each added 10 points. #Max Dibrell# (Jr.-Duluth, Minn./East) matched a career-high with seven rebounds to lead CSS. Geoff Probst had a career-high 32 points to pace the Blugolds.
The Saints return to Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action next weekend as they will face Presentation College in Aberdeen, S.D. on Friday night. The tip-off for that game is scheduled for approximately 7:30 p.m. following the women's game.
