DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team took the lead on the opening score against North Central University on Tuesday evening and never looked back, defeating the Rams by a final score of 79-33 at the Burns Wellness Commons.
With North Central's six-foot-two-inch guard Naomi Sanon patrolling the inside, the Saints were content to kick it out, scoring 49 points outside of the paint, including 18 from beyond the arch.
#Taylor Fellbaum# (Fr.-Minong, Wis/Northwood HS) led the Saints in scoring with 15 points while going six-for-ten on the night including three consecutive three-point scores on three straight possessions in the first half. Behind her, juniors #Katie Christensen# (Elk River, Minn.) and #Kirsten Haukom# (Marshall, Minn.) each scored ten points. All thirteen active players on the Saints roster saw at least eight minutes of action, and all but one scored at least one basket. The Saints bench scored 40 points on the night.
Christensen earned a double-double by adding 11 steals, a new St. Scholastica single-game record for takeaways, to her aforementioned ten points. #Laura Amys# (Fr.-South Range, Wis./Superior HS) was second in steals with six. The Saints set a new school record for steals in a game with 32. St. Scholastica also set a new record for turnovers by an opponent when the Rams gave up the ball 49 times.
The Saints improve to 7-11 overall and have won four of their last five games. The Rams fall to 2-11 on the campaign. CSS remains unbeaten all-time against North Central with a record of 14-0. Saints' Head Coach Stacy Deadrick needs just four more victories for her 200th career win.
The Saints go on the road on Saturday for an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) game against Northland College. The tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
