BIG SECOND HALF DOES IN CSS

NEW ULM, Minn. – After trailing by just six at halftime, the St. Scholastica women's basketball team was out-scored 38-12 in the second half on its way to a 73-41 loss at Martin Luther College.

The Saints fall to an overall record of 5-11 and an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) record of 3-3. The Knights improve to 6-8 overall and 4-2 in conference action. The loss by CSS snaps a five-game win streak against the Knights.

Martin Luther scored the first six points of the game, but CSS quickly scored eight of the next 10 points to tie the game. #Alexa Leighton# (Jr.-Superior, Wis.) scored six of St. Scholastica's first 10 points. The Saints never led, but tied the contest on four different occasions. The Knights went on a 10-0 run to take a 28-18 lead with 6:35 left in the first half. CSS cut the lead down to four after a #Shannon Lehikoinen# (Fr.-Superior, Wis.) 3-pointer with 27 seconds left and went into halftime only down 35-29.

The Saints shot 55-percent in the first half, but committed 18 turnovers, which led to 16 Martin Luther points. The Knights shot 44-percent and out-scored CSS 24-10 in the paint.

Martin Luther went on a 15-0 run early in the second half and never looked back with the margin getting as high as 34 point. The Knights cruised to a 73-41 victory.

The Saints shot 13-percent in the second half to finish at 29-percent for the game. Martin Luther shot 45-percent for the game and forced 33 CSS turnovers. The Knights out-scored the Saints 48-16 in the paint.

Alexa Leighton (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) had nine points to lead CSS. Shannon Lehikoinen (Superior, Wis./Superior HS) added seven points. #Kelly Cinquegrani# (So.-Buffalo, Minn.) had a team-high seven rebounds. Erica Babinec had 22 points to lead the Knights.

The Saints will be in action again tomorrow when they travel to face Bethany Lutheran. The game is set to begin at 3 p.m.
