NEW ULM, Minn. – #Troy Miller# (
Sr.-Stillwater, Minn.) dropped a career-high 23 points, but the St. Scholastica men's basketball team let a second half lead slip away as Martin Luther College went on to win 74-66.
The Saints fall to 6-10 overall and 3-3 in Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action. The Knights improve to 9-6 overall and 5-1 in the UMAC. The Saints have lost the last three games to Martin Luther overall and the last three in New Ulm, Minn.
CSS went on a 9-0 run early to take a six-point lead four minutes into the game. The Knights answered with a 10-0 run later in the half to take a 20-15 lead halfway through the first half. The Saints then went on another 9-0 run to regain the lead at 27-24 with a minute to go in the half and went into halftime with a 28-26 edge.
CSS held Martin Luther to just 25-percent shooting in the half, while making 42-percent themselves. The Saints, who were playing without #Jesse Taylor# (
Sr.-Superior, Wis./Maranatha Academy), out-scored the Knights 14-8 in the paint.
The Saints went up by as many as six after a
Troy Miller (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) 3-pointer early in the second half. St. Scholastica held the lead until halfway though the half when the Knights went on a 10-1 run to take the lead and followed that with a 7-0 run to take a nine-point lead with 5:20 remaining in the contest. The Saints got as close as six with a minute left, but Martin Luther held on for the 74-66 victory.
CSS shot a little better in the second half to finish at 44-percent for the game, while the Knights shot a lot better with a 58-percent shooting percentage in the half to finish at 41-percent for the game. The Knights had a 46-27 advantage on the glass.
Miller was almost perfect from the field on the night, going 6-for-8, including 4-for-4 on 3-point attempts, and 7-for-7 from the free throw line. #Danny Schmitz# (
So.-Hinckley, Minn./Hinckley-Finlayson) chipped in 12 points and #Derek Anderson# (
So.-Cook, Minn.) had a team-high seven rebounds. Caleb Free had a game-high 25 points to lead the Knights.
The Saints will be in Mankato tomorrow for a game against Bethany Lutheran. The tip-off for that game is scheduled for approximately 5 p.m. following the women's game.
