DULUTH, Minn. – In front of a sellout crowd at Mars Lakeview Arena, the fourth-ranked St. Scholastica hockey team felled their border rivals from Wisconin-Superior by a final score of 7-2 behind outstanding goaltending and one player's four-goal night for their tenth straight victory.
With St. Scholastica's dominant win over No. 2 Wis.-Superior and top-ranked Plattsburg State falling earlier in the week, the Saints may find themselves ranked No. 1 in the country in this week's poll.
#AJ Tucker# (Sr.-Fort Frances, Ont.) was the star of the game for the Saints, scoring four goals including an acrobatic shot while falling to the ice in the second period. His fourth goal may have proven to be the backbreaker for the Yellowjackets, as it put the Saints up 6-2 with under ten minutes remaining.
Nine additional Saints had points on the evening, including a four-point performance (one goal, three assists) from #Joey Martini# (Sr.-Calgary, Alta.). #Carter Davis# (Fr.-Moose Jaw, Sask.) and #Jeremy Dawes# (Fr.-Winnipeg, Man.) each earned three points on the night.
Not to be forgotten, goaltender #Steve Bounds# (Sr.-Airdrie, Alta.) stopped 36 of 38 shots en route to the victory, his twelfth of the season. The Saints finished with 30 shots on net against Superior goalie Chad Beiswenger.
Nearly one hour and 15 minutes worth of penalties were handed out in the game, but the two strong penalty-killing teams held each other to just three power play goals on 11 opportunities.
Looking forward, St. Scholastica hosts seventh-ranked University of Wis.-Stout next Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena with the puck dropping at 7:05 p.m.
