CSS WOMEN GET REVENGE AND DEFEAT FINLANDIA IN OVERTIME

DULUTH, Minn. – After losing in overtime at Finlandia, the St. Scholastica women's basketball team returned the favor with an 86-82 overtime victory over the Lions tonight at Reif Gym.

The Saints improve to 4-10 overall, while Finlandia drops to 2-14. The Saints improve to 6-5 all-time against the Lions and are 5-1 all-time at home versus Finlandia.

The Lions jumped out to an 8-2 lead, but the Saints scored six of the next seven points to cut the Finlandia lead to 9-8. However, the Lions responded with an 8-0 run. CSS then cut the lead back down to 18-16 after a #Taylor Fellbaum# (Fr.-Minong, Wis./Northwood) jumper. Finlandia extended its lead back to eight, but the Saints cut the lead to two and went into halftime trailing 32-29.

The Saints shot 38-percent in the first half, while the Lions shot 50-percent. The Saints scored 16 points off of 18 Finlandia turnovers.

In the second half, the Saints took their first lead of the game at the 17:45-mark after a 3-pointer by #Katie Christensen# (Jr.-Elk River, Minn.). The lead changed hands three times and there were five ties over the next five minutes. The Lions went on a 13-2 run to take a 58-50 lead with over eight minutes to play. CSS quickly came back with an 8-0 run to tie the game with 6:18 left in the second half. The teams then traded the lead late with Finlandia holding the upper hand with a 1:31 top play. With 1:03 to play, #Laura Amys# (Fr.-South Range, Wis./Superior) hit 1-of-2 free throws to tie the game at 68-68. The Saints would have a half-court shot at the end of regulation, but it would be short as the game went to overtime.

In overtime, the Lions scored the first basket, but then the Saints scored the next six straight points to go up 74-70. The Saints were effective from the free throw line in overtime, going 10-for-12 as they held on to defeat the Lions 86-82.

The Saints shot 42-percent for the game with its percentages increasing each period. The Lions shot 52-percent for the game, but committed 28 turnovers. St. Scholastica scored 38 points off of those turnovers, and the CSS bench scored 36 points.

Katie Christensen (Elk River, Minn./Elk River Senior HS) led the way with a career-high 22 points, including 8-for-8 from the free throw line. #Kirsten Haukom# (Jr.-Marshall, Minn.) added a season-high 20 points and was 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Taylor Fellbaum (Minong, Wis./Northwood HS) had a career-high 12 points and Laura Amys (South Range, Wis./Superior HS) and #Alexa Leighton# (Jr.-Superior, Wis.) each added 10 points. Amys also had a team-high 11 rebounds. Jodi Riutta led the way for the Lions with 24 points.

The Saints get back to conference action on Saturday when they host Northland College at Reif Gym. It will also be Alumni Day. The action is set to begin at 3 p.m.
