ST. PETER, Minn. – The sixth-ranked St. Scholastica hockey team won its eighth consecutive game with a 5-0 victory over Gustavus Adolphus College tonight at Don Roberts Ice Rink.
The Saints improve to 12-3-1 overall, while the Golden Gusties fall to 8-7-0 overall. The five-goal loss is the worst this season by the Gusties, who were receiving votes in the most current USCHO.com Division III poll.
The Saints scored first for the fifth straight game when with 1:49 left in the opening period #Joey Martini# (Sr.-Calgary, Alta.), off a rebound, netted a power-play goal. #Jeremy Dawes# (Fr.-Winnipeg, Man.) and #Carter Davis# (Fr.-Moose Jaw, Sask.) assisted on the goal. The Golden Gusties out-shot the Saints 14-9 in the first period.
CSS extended its lead just 1:30 into the second period when #Jordan Chong# (Jr.-North Vancouver, B.C.) tipped in an even-handed goal. #Trevor Geiger# (Sr.-Salmon Arm, B.C) and #Matt Stengl# (Sr.-East Grand Forks, Minn.) had the assists. The Saints out-shot Gustavus 6-4 in the second period.
The Saints put a statement on the weekend by scoring three goals in the third period. The first goal came about three minutes into the period when #AJ Tucker# (Sr.-Fort Frances, Ont.) scored. Martini had the assist. #Chris Meagher# (Jr.-Victoria, B.C.) then scored his first collegiate goal with 12:20 remaining. Chong assisted the goal. The last goal of the night was scored by Trevor Geiger (Salmon Arm, British Columbia/Salmon Arm (BCHL)) on a breakaway to make the final 5-0. Stengl had the assist.
#Steve Bounds# (Sr.-Airdrie, Alta.) making his first appearance of 2009 earned his third shutout of the season, which ties Tyler Johnson (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks HS) for the most in a season in program history. His five career shutouts are also tied with Tyler Johnson (East Grand Forks, Minn./East Grand Forks HS) for the most in a career. Bounds made 28 saves on the night. The Saints held Gustavus to 0-for-5 on the power-play.
The Saints will finish up their non-conference schedule Tuesday night when they travel to face Northland College. The action begins at 7:05 p.m. The game will not be broadcasted by ESPN Radio 560 –WEBC.
