MOORHEAD, Minn. – For the second consecutive day and third time this young season, the St. Scholastica women's soccer team pulled out a double overtime victory, this time over the University of Wisconsin-River Falls by a score of 3-2 at the Cobber Soccer Invitational.
#Robin Johnson# (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./Marshall), who was directly involved with the double overtime victory over UW-Oshkosh yesterday, got the game-winner today with a goal just 1:15 into the second overtime.
The Saints got off to quick start as Robin Johnson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School) got her first goal on the afternoon just 54 seconds into the match. #Sarah Bartlette# (Jr.-East Grand Forks, Minn./Shattuck St. Mary's) assisted the goal. In the 15th minute, CSS extended the lead to 2-0 when #Cortney McKenzie# (Jr.-Maple Grove, Minn.) scored on a penalty kick. McKenzie scored the game-winner yesterday on a penalty kick.
The Falcons got on the scoreboard at 23:39 when Kelly Piersak put one in the net. Then with 17 seconds left in the first half, the Falcons' Eryn Lansverk scored to tie it at 2-2.
The scoring slowed down dramatically in the second half as neither team scored and there was six shots combined in the half. So the match went into overtime and River Falls got the only shot in the first 10-minute session and the match went to a second overtime.
In the second overtime, Robin Johnson (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Marshall School), who was fouled by the goalkeeper yesterday to force the game-winning penalty kick, did it herself today with a goal at 101:15 to give the Saints the win. #Sara Olson# (Sr.-Phoenix, Ariz./Paradise Valley) had the assist. Johnson has five goals this season, scoring in all four contests, and has 50 goals in her career. The school record is 58 by Nikki Stronnski.
Freshman #Bailey Mahlum# (Fr.-Bismarck, N.D.) had five saves for the Saints to improve to 5-0-0. Emily Stieler had three saves in the loss for the Falcons. CSS out-shot River Falls 10-9 in the match.
The Saints improve to 4-0-0 this season and have won 17 consecutive regular season matches. The Saints have won three of their four matches this year in double overtime. The Falcons fall to 0-4-0 on the campaign.
The Saints will begin Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action on Wednesday when they will face Northland College in Ashland. That match is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. following the men's contest.
