SAINT PETER, Minn. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team lost a pair of matches by 3-1 scores today on the second and final day of the Gustavus Volleyball Classic at Gus Young Court.
The Saints took on the host Gustavus Adolphus in the first match of the day. All four sets were very close as neither team won by more than three points. The Golden Gusties took the first set by a score of 26-24. CSS tied it up in the second set, winning 25-23. However, the Gusties would take the third and fourth sets by identical 25-22 scores to defeat the Saints 3-1.
CSS had 55 kills in the match and were led by #Shawna Varichak# (
Sr.-Hibbing, Minn.), who had 19 kills. #Amy Thompson# (
Sr.-Onamia, Minn.) added 11 kills. The Gusties improved to 7-0 with the victory.
St. Scholastica then had a rematch with the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. The Saints handed the 20th-ranked Eagles their first loss of the season last night. Today's match would be a different story as La Crosse got off to a good start, winning the first set 25-19. The Saints took the second set by a score of 25-15, but the Eagles took the next two games 25-14 and 25-19 to hand the Saints the loss.

Sr.-Grand Rapids, Minn./Greenway) and
Shawna Varichak (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) each had nine kills apiece to lead the Saints. Varichak was named to the eight-person all-tournament team as she had 60 kills in four matches at the classic.
CSS drops to a record of 1-7 overall and will have its home opener next Saturday when it hosts Twin Port rival UW-Superior. That match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. in Reif Gym.
