SAINT PETER, Minn. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team lost its first match today at the Gustavus Volleyball Classic, but came back to shock 20th-ranked University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in five sets inthe night cap at Gus Young Court.
The Saints faced Viterbo in their first match and lost in straight sets 25-23, 25-12, 29-27. #Shawna Varichak# (Sr.-Hibbing, Minn.) led CSS with 10 kills and added 10 digs in the match. Freshman #Caitlin Aten# (Fr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) had 20 set assists and #Cassie Roden# (Sr.-Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) had 19 digs to lead the Saints.
CSS then faced the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. UW-La Crosse was ranked 20th in the CSTV/AVCA Division III preseason poll and were 4-0 coming into the match. The Eagles took the first set by a score of 25-16. La Crosse had 16 kills and no attack errors in the set.
The Saints then took a close second set by a score of 25-23. It was another close set in the third, but the Eagles prevailed, winning by a 29-27 score. CSS wouldn't give up though and took the fourth set by a score of 25-22.
After suffering three, five-set losses so far this season, the Saints refused to lose this one as they took the fifth-set tiebreaker by a score of 15-13 to capture their first win of the season. The Saints finished with 56 kills in the match, including nine in the fifth set.
Shawna Varichak (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) had a match-high 22 kills. #Amy Thompson# (Sr.-Onamia, Minn.) added 15 kills and #Dustie Richardson# (Sr.-Grand Rapids, Minn./Greenway) had 10 kills. Caitlin Aten (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley Senior HS) had 45 set assists in the match.
The Saints are now 1-5 overall and will face host Gustavus Adolphus tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. and then will face UW-La Crosse again at noon to conclude the classic.
