DULUTH, Minn. – After not having scored a goal in the previous three meetings against Macalester College, the St. Scholastica women's soccer team put up three on the Scots on its way to a 3-1 victory today at Saints Field.
The win gives the Saints a 2-0-0 record on the season, while the Scots suffer their first set back and fall to 2-1-0. The Saints also pick up their first win against the Scots in series history.
The contest was back-and-forth early as neither team had much of an advantage. Then in the 31st minute, the Scots' goalkeeper would be called for a penalty in the box, leading to a penalty kick. #Jen Krokum# (Jr.-Duluth, Minn./East) lined up the kick and hit it right into the net to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. It was Krokum's second goal of the season.
The score remained 1-0 into the second half. The Scots started to pick up the pressure on the Saints defense, having many chances in the box area. However, it was a shot by Emily Hall from approximately 40 yards out that lofted into the net in the 58th minute to tie the contest up at 1-1.
CSS would get a chance in the 73rd minute as #Angie Groh# (Jr.-Andover, Minn./St. Francis) hit a perfect lead pass to #Robin Johnson# (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./Marshall) and Johnson maneuvered around the goalkeeper and netted a goal to put the Saints up 2-1. It was her second goal of the season. St. Scholastica put the game on ice less than four minutes later as #Amanda Smerz# (Fr.-Duluth, Minn./East) got past the defender and put the ball past the goalkeeper for her first collegiate goal to make the score 3-1. Groh also assisted that goal. That is how it ended as the Saints prevailed 3-1.
#Bailey Mahlum# (Fr.-Bismarck, N.D.) had seven saves to improve to 2-0 in her first two starts. Jenny Lee had six saves in the loss for the Scots. Shots were even in the match with each team having 14.
