DULUTH, Minn. – Less than 24 hours after losing to Northwestern College, the St. Scholastica volleyball team bounced back with a 3-0 victory this afternoon over Crown College at Reif Gym.
The Saints improve to 5-9 overall and 1-1 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC). The Storm falls to 1-9 overall and 0-2 in the conference. The Saints are unbeaten against the Storm in 17 total matches between the two schools. It was also the first win for CSS this season when the match only goes three sets.
It was all St. Scholastica from the beginning, jumping out to a 10-4 lead in the first set as CSS took the set 25-12. The Saints had 15 kills and no errors in that first set. It was a similar story in the second set as the Saints took a 9-2 lead on its way to a 25-15 set win.
The Saints kept it going in the third set with a match-high 19 kills on their way to defeating the Storm 25-12. The match lasted just 59 minutes, the quickest of the season. CSS also had its highest attack percentage on the season (.453) with a season-low seven errors.
#Amy Thompson# (Sr.-Onamia, Minn.) led the Saints with 15 kills and #Shawna Varichak# (Sr.-Hibbing, Minn.) added 11 kills. #Caitlin Aten# (Fr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) had 39 set assists and #Cassie Roden# (Sr.-Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) led the Saints with 14 digs.
The Saints will go on the road Thursday when they take on the University of Minnesota-Morris. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
