DULUTH, Minn. – The defending Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) champion Northwestern College Eagles were too much for the St. Scholastica volleyball team tonight, taking the conference opener 3-0 at Reif Gym.
The loss drops the Saints to 4-9 overall and 0-1 in UMAC play. Northwestern improves to 8-4 and 1-0 in conference play. The Eagles lead the all-time series 28-16.
The first set would be close early, but the Eagles extended their lead midway through the set and won by a score of 25-20. The Saints had more kills than the Eagles in the first set, but committed more errors.
CSS fell behind early in the second set, but battled back to take the lead 10-9. However, Northwestern went on a 9-3 run after that on its way to capturing the second set 25-20. The Eagles then jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the third set and never looked back taking the match and winning the set 25-16.
The Saints finished with 32 kills and an attack percentage of .104. The Eagles had 40 kills and an attack percentage of .213. #Shawna Varichak# (Sr.-Hibbing, Minn.) had 11 kills and 15 digs to lead the Saints. #Caitlin Aten# (Fr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) had 25 set assists and 13 digs.
The Saints will be at home tomorrow when they host Crown College at 1 p.m. in Reif Gym.
