CSS SCORES TWO EARLY SECOND HALF GOALS TO BEAT KNIGHTS

NEW ULM, Minn. – After being tied at the half, the St. Scholastica men's soccer team scored two goals in the first nine minutes of the second half to defeat Martin Luther College 3-1 this afternoon at the MLC Bowl.

The Saints improve to 5-3-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) action. The Knights fall to 2-2-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the conference play. CSS is now 16-9 all-time against Martin Luther and have won the last three meetings.

The Saints struck first in the 22nd minute when #Toby Peter# (So.-Spalt, Germany/U.S. Bach) put the ball in the back of the net. #Courtney Bonnick# (Fr.-Nottingham, England) and #Greg Doornink# (So.-Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) had the assists. It was Peter's second goal in as many contests. Less than four minutes later, the Knights tied it up on a penalty kick by Philip Kurbis. The 1-1 score held up the rest of the first half.

CSS took the lead just 2:59 into the second half when #Rob Miller# (Jr.-Duluth, Minn./East) scored his first goal of the 2008 season. Toby Peter (Spalt, Germany/J.S. Bach Gymnasium) and #Dustin James# (So.-Superior, Wis.) had the assists. The Saints gave themselves some insurance in the 54th minute when Courtney Bonnick (Nottingham, England/Haywood Comprehensive) scored an unassisted goal. St. Scholastica held it from there, winning 3-1.

#Sam Reed# (Fr.-Eastbourne, England/Causeway) had four saves in net for the Saints to improve to 2-3-0 on the season. Alex Vandenberg had 12 saves in the loss for Martin Luther. The Saints out-shot the Knights 25-8 in the contest.

The Saints continue conference action on the road tomorrow when they will square off with Bethany Lutheran. The match is scheduled to begin at noon.
