ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team split its matches today at the Northwestern College Quad, falling to Gustavus Adolphus College 3-0 and then defeating Hamline University 3-2.

The Saints opened up against the Golden Gusties of Gustavus Adolphus. The Gusties had 15 kills in the first set on their way to taking the set 25-19. CSS then fought hard to take the second set, but fell by a narrow score of 30-28. The Saints had 15 kills in the set. That close loss hurt the Saints in the third set as the Gusties closed out the match, winning the set 25-15.

#Dustie Richardson# (Sr.-Grand Rapids, Minn./Greenway) led the Saints with nine kills. #Caitlin Aten# (Fr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) had 29 assists. Gustavus improved to 11-1 on the year with the win. It was also the second time Gustavus beat CSS this season.

CSS then faced Hamline in its second match. After the Pipers won the first set 25-17, the Saints battled and took the next two sets 25-21 and 25-19. CSS had a match-high 17 kills in the third set. The Pipers then dominated the fourth set to keep the match alive, winning 25-11.

With the score 9-8 in the fifth set, the Saints took six of the next eight points to take the match, winning 15-10.

#Amy Thompson# (Sr.-Onamia, Minn.) had 17 kills to lead CSS. #Shawna Varichak# (Sr.-Hibbing, Minn.) had 13 kills and #Megan Baartman# (Jr.-Andover, Minn.) added 10 kills. Caitlin Aten (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley Senior HS) 43 set assists in the match. Hamline falls to 9-4 on the season

The Saints are now 4-8 overall and return home on Friday to open the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) schedule against Northwestern College. The match begins at 7 p.m. at Reif Gym in the Burns Wellness Commons.
