DULUTH, Minn. – Northwestern College up-ended the St. Scholastica men's soccer team on Friday afternoon on Saints Field in Duluth, Minn. by a final score of 2-0. It was the Saints men's first regular season conference loss since the 2006 season.
The Northwestern Eagles jumped out to an early lead as Ben Haugen netted his first goal of the season with a header off a Benjamin Fast-free kick that slid just out of the reach of CSS goalkeeper #Sam Reed# (Fr.-Eastbourne, England/Causeway School). The Saints kept pressure on the Eagles throughout the first half with six shots but were not able to make good on any of them.
The Eagles piled on the offense early in the second and netted their second goal off a long crossing shot courtesy Calvin Kanowitz. CSS came back with nine more shots in the second half for a game total of 15, but they were not able to solve Northwestern 'keeper Danny King, who finished the game with seven saves.
Junior #Robbie Miller# (Duluth, Minn./East HS) led the Saints starters in shots with four. Sophomore #Cody Sveiven# (Coon Rapids, Minn.) earned three shots off of the bench.
The Saints, who fall to 3-3-0 (1-1-0 UMAC) on the season following the loss, will return tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. to take on the visiting Crown College Storm.
