DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's soccer team took their first loss of the season on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Augsburg College Auggies by a score of 1-0 on a rain-soaked Saints Field.
Despite its new turf floor, Saints Field was slow for both teams in the pouring rain as the teams combined for a total of 15 shots with only eight on target.
It was not until the 74th minute that Augsburg forward Bri Clark snuck one past the CSS goaltender, as the ball came in awkwardly on a header by Auggie midfielder Courtney Gamrath, and was mishandled, allowing Clark to tap it in.
In a game starved for offense, #Angie Groh# (Jr.-Andover, Minn./St. Francis) and #Kristen Stangel# (Sr.-Grand Rapids, Minn.) lead the Saints with two shots apiece. #Sarah Bartlette# (Jr.-East Grand Forks, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's) had the best scoring opportunity for Scholastica with a shot saved by Gamrath in the 82nd minute.
#Bailey Mahlum# (Fr.-Bismarck, N.D.) finished with three saves for the game, while her Augsburg counterpart, Maggie DeGroot, finished with five.
With the loss, CSS falls to 5-1-0 on the season, while Augsburg improves their record to 4-1-1.
The Saints will be in action at Saints Field again on Tuesday when they host the Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers at 4 p.m. following the men's match.
