SAINTS WIN HOME OPENER OVER BORDER RIVAL SUPERIOR

DULUTH, Minn. – After eight matches away from Duluth, the St. Scholastica volleyball team took down its port-rival the University of Wisconsin-Superior 3-1 this afternoon in the home opener at Reif Gym.

The Saints improve to a record of 2-7 overall, while the Yellowjackets fall to 5-6. The Saints take an 11-10 lead in the all-time series. CSS snaps a two-match losing streak to Superior.

CSS, who has struggled this season in the first set, came out and took it today by a score of 25-19. The Saints had 13 kills in the set. The Yellowjackets struggled in that first set with 10 attack errors. CSS kept it going by taking the second set by a score of 25-18. Superior had a 15-11 attack advantage on CSS, but committed four more errors.

The third set was the best set for the Saints; however it was also the best set for the Yellowjackets. With the score tied at 23-23, the Yellowjackets, would get the last two points and extend the match, winning 25-23. The Saints had an attack percentage of .361 in the set, while the Yellowjackets had a percentage of .326.

It was all CSS in the fourth set as the Saints jumped out to a 10-1 lead and never looked back to prevail by a score of 25-14.
#Amy Thompson# (Sr.-Onamia, Minn.) had a match-high 17 kills for the Saints, while #Shawna Varichak# (Sr.-Hibbing, Minn.) was right behind her with 15 kills. #Megan Baartman# (Jr.-Andover, Minn.) added 10 kills. #Caitlin Aten# (Fr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) had a team-high 49 set assists for CSS.

The Saints will travel to face the University of Wisconsin-Stout on Tuesday in Menomonie. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Johnson Fieldhouse.
