MEN'S SOCCER OPENS UMAC PLAY WITH A WIN

ASHLAND, Wis. – The preseason Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) favorite St. Scholastica men's soccer team opened up the conference season today with a 2-0 victory over Northland College at Northland Field.

The Saints improve to 2-1-0 overall this season, while the LumberJacks fall to a record of 1-2-0 overall. The Saints are now 33-16-5 all-time against Northland and have won the last six meetings against the LumberJacks.

On a windy day, the Saints out-shot the Jacks 6-0 in the first half, but could not muster a goal in the half as it was scoreless at the break. Less than three minutes into the second half, the Saints finally broke through when the Jacks were called for a penalty in the box, which led to a penalty kick goal by #Jermaine Dacres# (So.-Nottingham, England/Haywood).

In the 57th minute, CSS added another goal off of a corner kick as #Courtney Bonnick# (Fr.-Nottingham, England) scored his third goal of the season to put the Saints up 2-0. #Dustin James# (So.-Superior, Wis.) had the assist. The Jacks only got off three shots in the match as the Saints went on to win 2-0.

#Zach Schneider# (So.-Duluth, Minn./Marshall) saved two balls for the Saints to earn the victory in his first collegiate start. Matt Fryer had six saves in the loss for Northland. CSS out-shot Northland 13-3 in the match.
Up next for the Saints will be the University of St. Thomas on Sunday. The kickoff is scheduled for noon at South Campus Field in St. Paul.
