DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's soccer team played the first game on the new Saints Field turf today and didn't disappoint the 250 fans that came out as it defeated Hamline University 3-1.

The Saints had lost five of the previous six meetings against the Pipers, but had no trouble today. The Saints out-shot the Pipers 13-5 in the match. The win gives CSS back-to-back victories in season-openers.

It was a pair of Englishmen that teamed up for a couple of goals early as #Courtney Bonnick# (Fr.-Nottingham, England) got a couple feeds from #Jermaine Dacres# (So.-Nottingham, England) and put the ball in the net to give the Saints some cushion. The first goal of the season came at 36:04 when Bonnick got a centering pass from Dacres and deflected it past the goalkeeper.

Early in the second half, Bonnick leaped and hit a header off of a Dacres corner kick to put CSS up 2-0 at 46.52. Hamline cut the lead in half less than seven minutes later when Drew Lukas netted a goal to make it 2-1.

The Saints added insurance in the 76th minute when #Cody Sveiven# (So.-Coon Rapids, Minn.) hit a header off a cross into the net to make it 3-1. #Greg Doornink# (So.-Cottage Grove, Minn./Park) and #Joey Maida# (So.-Duluth, Minn./East) had the assists. That is how it ended as the Saints prevailed 3-1.

Freshman #Sam Reed# (Fr.-Eastbourne, England) got the win in net for the Saints, stopping two Piper shots on the afternoon. Zach Nelson had five saves in the loss for Hamline.

The Saints won't be in action until next Sunday when they will face St. John's University in the Cobber Invite at Concordia-Moorhead. That match is scheduled for noon.
