NEWBERG, Ore. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team went the distance in both of its matches today against Mills College (Calif.) and George Fox University (Ore.), but lost both of them by just two points in tiebreaking fifth set on the final day of the Bruin-Wildcat Invite at George Fox University.
In the first match against Mills, the Saints look to be on their way to victory with 2-1 lead after three sets, but dropped the fourth and fifth set by a narrow two points. CSS took the first set 25-18 with 14 kills in the set. Mills answered by taking the second set by a 25-19 score. The best set of the match for the Saints was the third as they had a .348 attack percentage and won convincingly 25-11.
The Saints looked to be on their way to their first win of the season, but dropped the fourth set 27-25. St. Scholastica had 15 kills in the set. Then in the fifth-set tiebreaker Mills pulled out a 16-14 victory. Mills had 10 kills in the in the fifth set.
CSS finished with 55 kills in the match and was led by #Shawna Varichak# (Sr.-Hibbing, Minn.), who had a match-high 21 kills. #Amy Thompson# (Sr.-Onamia, Minn.) added 13 kills.
The Saints then took on the host, George Fox University. The Bruins took a close first set by a score of 25-23. St. Scholastica answered in the second set, pulling out a 25-21 victory. George Fox took the third set by a score of 25-17. The Saints kept the match alive by winning the fourth set by a score of 25-20. Once again in the fifth set tiebreaker, the set went past regulation and the Bruins prevailed by a 17-15 score.
CSS had 48 kills in the match, while George Fox had 64 kills. Shawna Varichak (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) had 19 kills to lead the Saints again. #Dustie Richardson# (Sr.-Grand Rapids, Minn.) added 12 kills in the loss.
The Saints fall to 0-4 on the season and will return to the region to take part in the Gustavus Adolphus Invitational on Friday and Saturday. CSS will open against Viterbo University (Wis.) at 4 p.m.
