AURORA, Ill. – In an early pivotal regional game, the St. Scholastica women's soccer team went down to Illinois and defeated Aurora University 2-1 in double overtime this afternoon thanks to a goal in the 108th minute by #Jen Krokum# (Jr.-Duluth, Minn./East).
Both the Saints and the Spartans participated in the NCAA Division III National Tournament last season. The Spartans lost in the first round, while the Saints lost to eventual national champion Wheaton College in the second round.
The Spartans struck first when Allison Bailey scored in the 18th minute. The score remained 1-0 into the second half until #Robin Johnson# (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./Marshall) scored an unassisted goal at 61.36 to tie the match.
The contest remained tied after 90 minutes and after the first overtime. It wasn't until the 107:15-mark when Jen Krokum (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) scored an unassisted goal to give CSS the dramatic 2-1 victory.
#Bailey Mahlum# (Fr.-Bismarck, N.D.) got the win in net for the Saints in her first collegiate game. Mahlum had six saves, including one in overtime. Jenny Jarvis had eight saves in the loss for the Spartans. St. Scholastica out-shot Aurora 12-10 in the match, including 10-4 in the second half and both overtimes.
The Saints will have their home opener Wednesday when they take on Macalester College at 5 p.m. at the new Saints Field.
