NEWBERG, Ore. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team opened the season on a down note, dropping a pair of matches today to Linfield University (Ore.) and Menlo College (Calif.) at the Bruin-Wildcat Invitational at Miller Gym on the campus of George Fox University.
The Saints dropped the opening contest to Linfield by a score of 3-0. CSS then came close to grabbing the second match against Menlo, but fell in five sets 3-2.
The Saints dropped the first set to the Wildcats by a score of 25-21. In the second set, the Wildcats held on to win 25-23. Linfield ended the match by winning the third set by a score of 25-11.
CSS had a total of 29 kills in the match and was led by #Amy Thompson# (
Sr.-Onamia, Minn.) with 10 kills. #Cassie Roden# (
Sr.-Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) had 17 digs in the loss.
The Saints then squared off against Menlo College. Menlo took the first set by a score of 25-22. CSS then took the second set by a score of 25-15. The Saints took a 2-1 lead in the match winning the third set by a narrow score of 25-23.
The Saints almost picked up the win in the fourth set, but fell by a score of 28-26. Then in the fifth and deciding set, Menlo would go on to win by a score of 15-11.
St. Scholastica had 49 kills in the match and once again
Amy Thompson (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS) led the way with 12 kills. #Shawna Varichak# (
Sr.-Hibbing, Minn.) added 10 kills. The Saints had 40 more attacks and 13 less errors than Menlo, but Menlo finished with five more kills.
The Saints will face Mills College (Calif.) at 11 a.m. local time tomorrow and then will finish against host George Fox University at 1 p.m.
