Their backs to the wall, St. Scholastica jumped out to an early lead in an elimination game with Northwestern College on Sunday at the 2008 UMAC Tournament, then made it holdup in winning 5-2 over the regular season UMAC champions.

The victory sends the Saints into the first of what they hope will be a two-game series against Northland College in the championship bracket while the Eagles end their stay in Waconia, Minn., with their second loss of the tournament.

A bases loaded situation in the top of the first inning ended up causing big trouble for Northwestern as an Eagle error allowed two unearned runs to cross the plate for the Saints. Katie Brown (Emmett, Idaho/Emmett HS)'s sacrifice fly to center field brought in what would prove to be the winning run in a 3-run first.

Trailing 6-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth, Northwestern finally got on the board as pitcher Kayla Jenkins (Esko, Minn./Esko HS), who to that point had allowed just four hits, walked four batters sandwiched around a single for a pair of Northwestern runs.

It wasn't enough, though, as Jenkins and the Saints held on for the win and kept alive their hopes for a seventh consecutive postseason conference title.
