Just four days ago the Saints pasted a 9-1 five-inning shellacking on visiting Northland College, but the 2008 UMAC Tournament opener for both teams was a complet reversal of fortunes as the LumberJills beat the Saints by the identical 9-1, five-inning score in Waconia, Minn.
The game began on Friday afternoon before play was suspended in the middle of the third inning with the 'Jills leading 4-1.
A nights rest awoke the Northland bats it seems as on Saturday they opened play when the game resumed in the bottom of the third with four runs off Saints starting pitcher Kayla Jenkins (Esko, Minn./Esko HS).
Not much went right for the Saints in a loss that puts them one defeat away from packing their bags and heading home. Their only run came in the second inning when Gina Garramone (Duluth, Minn./Moorhead Senior HS) doubled then scored on a two-out single to center by Betsy Wehseler (Ironton, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS).
Hoping to get back into the winner's bracket of the tournament, the Saints will now have to beat Martin Luther College, losers to regular season UMAC champion Northwestern College in the other first round game.
