Martin Luther College had no answer for the Saints on Sunday morning as they gave up runs in bunches over the first four innings in falling to St. Scholastica by a 24-1 score at the conference Crossover held in the Irish Dome in Rosemount, Minn.
In the opening inning the Saints pushed nine runs across the plate, initiated by a solo home run from Kristin Swartz (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS). The next eight St. Scholastica batters reached base by either hits or walks in the big inning that set the tone for how the match-up would play out.
With three runs in the second, then four in the third and eight more in the fourth, the Saints gave starting pitcher Mary Jo McNamee (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba Senior HS) quite a cushion to work with.
McNamee pitched one-hit ball over her three innings on the mound, though, to take care of herself and earn the win.
Senior Kayla Kahilainen (New York Mills, Minn./New York Mills HS) -- who began the day with a 2-for-4 outing that included a home run and produced three RBI in the day's opening win over Minn.-Morris -- continued her hot bat in the rout of the Knights finishing 4-for-4 with four more RBI and three runs scored.
Five other Saints hitters had two hits apiece in the win but Chelsey Weiss (Brainerd, Minn./Brainerd HS) got the award for most efficient at-bats earning five RBI with only one hit and one walk. She reached safely on a fielders choice for an RBI in her second at-bat in the first inning, singled to center for another RBI in the second, picked up two more on a strange sac fly out in the third, then walked with the bases loaded in the fourth for her final RBI.
The win improves the St. Scholastica overall record to 13-19 overall while pushing their UMAC mark to 12-5. Martin Luther falls to 10-11 and 10-9.
