The Saints got off to a good start at the weekend's conference Crossover tournament as freshman Kayla Jenkins (Esko, Minn./Esko HS) pitched her third no-hitter of the season in St. Scholastica's 8-0 victory over Bethany Lutheran on the indoor turf of the Rosemount, Minn., Irish Dome late Friday evening.
The win was Jenkins' fifth in her last seven outings which include no-hitters over both Martin Luther College and Bethany Lutheran in games over the past 12 days.
The Saints picked up the only run they'd need in the bottom of the first but used a five run third inning to break the game open and give Jenkins more of a cushion.
The 3-4-5 hitters in the Saints line-up -- Michaela Carlson (Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson Senior HS), Kayla Kahilainen (New York Mills, Minn./New York Mills HS), and Gina Garramone (Duluth, Minn./Moorhead Senior HS) -- each generated two RBI apiece. Kahilainen and Garramone both hit solo home runs in addition to RBI singles in the five-inning rout over the Vikings.
The win improves St. Scholastica to 10-5 in the UMAC and 11-19 overall while Bethany falls to 5-10 in conference action and 5-18 for the season.
Following an off day on Saturday, the Saints will step back onto the carpet for an early Sunday morning game to kick off the remainder of the Crossover. Their 7 a.m. match-up against Minn.-Morris will be followed by a 10 a.m. game against Martin Luther and an 11:30 a.m. contest against Presentation College.
