The closing weekend of the 2008 regular season schedule began on Friday with the first of four matches in four cities over three days as the Saints kept themselves atop the UMAC standings with an unbeaten conference mark after disposing of Northwestern College by a score of 6-3 in St. Paul.
The 1-doubles team of Paula Beckermann (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) and Katie Motley (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) got the ball rolling in the right direction with a quick 8-1 win.
Casey Ruberto (Thunder Bay, Ont./Hammarskjold HS) and Katrina Sacchetti (Virginia, Minn./Virginia Secondary) at 2-doubles, and Megan Carlson (Pine City, Minn./Pine City HS) and Kelly Ross (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) at 3-doubles also earned victories putting the Saints ahead 3-0 after doubles play.
Beckermann had an easy time at 1-singles with a 6-4, 6-1 win for another point and Ruberto at 3-singles and Angela Shields (Pengilly, Minn./Greenway HS) at 6-singles both won in straight sets as well to clinch the match.
Shields' win was her 7th in a row and 8th in nine matches.
Now 5-0 in the conference, the win improves St. Scholastica's overall record to 15-6 while Northwestern drops to 9-7 overall.
