A seven-run first inning proved to be all the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs needed in their 9-1 victory over the visiting Saints on a blustery Wednesday afternoon at Junction Avenue Field.
The Saints picked up a run in the top of the second when Mya Gordon (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Central HS)'s single to center field brought home Kristin Swartz (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) but UMD's Heather Stamper (6-3) limited St. Scholastica to only three more hits the rest of the way.
Jenn Shaw (Northfield, Minn./Northfield HS) (0-1) took the loss for the Saints (5-16) after allowing the Bulldogs (13-13) five earned runs on nine hits, two walks and a strikeout.
Michaela Carlson (Alexandria, Minn./Jefferson Senior HS) had a 3-for-3 game for the Saints but her teammates couldn't bring her home. She was stranded at first after an opening inning single, left at second after a one-out double in the third, the led the fifth off with a double but was stuck at third at the close of the inning. The sophomore leads the Saints in batting with a .391 average following the loss to UMD.
