Like clockwork, every few years head coach John Baggs reaches another milestone coaching victory and Tuesday was one of those days as St. Scholastica defeated Eastern (Pa.) University 18-2 in Fort Pierce, Fla., for Baggs' 500th career victory.
In his 17th season leading the Saints, Baggs has climbed the career victories ladder within the NCAA where he entered the season ranked 10th in winning percentage (.723) among active coaches and 12th all time. His 496 wins coming into the year was 24th among active coaches and tied for 45th on the all time list.
The Saints (4-2) gave their coach his momentous victory by jumping out to a 5-2 lead over Eastern (0-3) after two innings, then pounding out seven runs in the top of the third to give starting freshman pitcher Matt Lewis (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) a comfortable cushion.
Lewis went the distance in earning his first collegiate win, pitching seven innings and allowing only two runs on four hits and three walks while striking out five.
The top of the Saints order did the most damage in the win as the first three batters combined for nine of the team's 15 hits as well as nine RBI.
Shortstop Kyle Wojtysiak (Proctor, Minn./Proctor HS), second baseman Darrin Carlson (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS), and first baseman Sean Claugherty (Oakdale, Minn./Tartan HS) each enjoyed a 3-for-5 day at the plate. One of Claugherty's hits was a double and Carlson registered a triple in the victory.
Center fielder Chad Peterson (New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS), batting ninth, helped create a murderer's row of sorts with his own 3-for-5 day which included a pair of doubles and four RBI.
The Saints attack battered four Eastern pitchers with starter Zach Clouser picking up the loss as he surrendered eight runs on five hits and five walks in only two innings of work.
