SAINTS OPEN UMAC-CHAMPIONSHIP DEFENSE WITH WIN OVER NORTHWESTERN

Katrina Sacchetti earned a win in singles action as well as with teammate Casey Ruberto in doubles in the Saints' 8-1 win over Northwestern Saturday afternoon.

The defending UMAC champion Saints' 8-1 win Saturday afternoon in the Burns Wellness Commons over a visiting Northwestern College squad that was the 2007 conference runner-up extended St. Scholastica's all-time mark in regular season UMAC matches to 54-0.
 
Paula Beckermann (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS), Casey Ruberto (Thunder Bay, Ont./Hammarskjold HS), and Katrina Sacchetti (Virginia, Minn./Virginia Secondary) each picked up pairs of wins for the Saints in the UMAC opener for each school.
 
Beckermann teamed with Katie Motley (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) for a win at No. 1 doubles then added another point with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles.
 
Ruberto and Sacchetti rolled over their Northwestern opponents at No. 2 doubles with an 8-0 win, then Ruberto nabbed a point at No. 3 singles winning 6-0, 7-5, while Sacchetti was routing her Eagle counterpart at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-1.
 
Other wins came from Kelly Ross (Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) and Megan Carlson (Pine City, Minn./Pine City HS) at No. 3 doubles, Natalie Urick (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS) at No. 5 singles, and Angela Shields (Pengilly, Minn./Greenway HS) at No. 6 singles.
 
The victory was the second of the day for the Saints (10-5, 1-0 UMAC) after pounding out a 7-2 win over Division II Bemidji State in the morning. Northwestern falls to 4-6 overall and 0-1 in the UMAC with the loss.
