The game only had 10 hits combined between the two teams but a pair of St. Scholastica errors allowed the 12th-ranked Bears from Washington (Mo.) University (17-5) to push three unearned runs across the plate in a 4-0 win on Saturday in St. Louis.
Third basemen Brenna Zavodnik (Eveleth, Minn./Virginia HS)'s error with two outs in the first enabled Wash. U. to grab a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the inning.
Saints starting pitcher Mary Jo McNamee (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba Senior HS) allowed only one hit over the next three innings but another Zavodnik error in the top of the fifth allowed a third Bears runner to score for a 3-0 lead.
The Saints were having even less success in the batter's box as Clair Voris of Wash. U. surrendered only one single apiece in the third and fourth innings before even allowing two baserunners in the fourth.
Zavodnik led the fourth off reaching on an error by her counterpart at third, then moved to second after a one-out walk to Kayla Kahilainen (New York Mills, Minn./New York Mills HS).
Down only 3-0 on the scoreboard, Gina Garramone (Duluth, Minn./Moorhead Senior HS) bunted the runners over with a sacrifice to put a pair of Saints in scoring position but Voris worked her way out of the jam when Kristin Swartz (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) hit a comebacker to Voris to end the inning.
The Bears scored one the honest way off McNamee in the top of the sixth for a four-run lead, and Voris (11-1) did the rest allowing only a walk in the bottom of the inning and a harmless single in the bottom of the seventh to earn the shutout victory.
McNamee (0-6) took the loss for St. Scholastica (1-12) allowing one earned and three unearned runs on six hits and a pair of walks. She struck out one.
