The Saints almost pulled the rally off against visiting St. Thomas on Sunday afternoon in the Burns Wellness Commons but the Tommies held off their hosts for a 5-4 win.

St. Thomas (3-0) took two of three doubles matches to start the day as the teams headed into singles play.

Casey Ruberto (Thunder Bay, Ont./Hammarskjold HS) and Katrina Sacchetti (Virginia, Minn./Virginia Secondary) picked up the lone point in doubles for St. Scholastica (2-2) with their 8-6 win over Brittany Bachman and Alexandra Frank at the No. 2 spot.

The Saints dropped No. 5 and No. 6 singles to fall behind 4-1, one point away from a loss.

Sacchetti picked up another point on the day with her straight set 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles to put the Saints on the right path.

While St. Scholastica's Katie Motley (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) was taking her first set at No. 2 singles 6-3, Paula Beckermann (Spicer, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) was finishing a tie-breaker for a first-set win at No. 1. Meanwhile at No. 3, Ruberto was on the losing end of an opening set tie-break.

Motley closed out her match with a 6-4 set for the win, but Ruberto fell behind 5-2 in her second set and Beckermann dropped her second set, by tie-break.

Ruberto won the next game to pull within 3-5 but St. Thomas' Dana Vilar took the next game to win the match and clinch the team match for the visiting Tommies.

All that was left was the now-epic battle at No. 1 between Beckermann and Frank, part of the losing tandem at No. 2 doubles for St. Thomas.

The duo had played about every point you can play in their first two sets as they headed into the third set super tie-breaker -- point by point, first to 10 is the winner, but win by two.

Fitting that Beckermann and Frank had to go beyond the limit in the super-breaker, but on this day it would be St. Scholastica's Beckermann who would finally prevail with an 11-9 victory.
