Match results

The Augustana (Ill.) College Vikings took on the Saints on the neutral courts at St. Norbert College on Saturday afternoon and came away with an 8-1 victory.

The loss drops the Saints to 1-3 on the year while the Vikings improve to 6-1.

Dillon Sterle (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS) and Peter Sparby (North Oaks, Minn./Mounds View HS) got St. Scholastica off on the right foot with an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles but things slid downhill from there for the Saints.

They lost both of the other doubles matches, then were shut out in singles play.

Two singles matches could just as easily turned in favor of the Saints, though.

Sterle and Rafael Romero from Augustana battled in the No. 1 flight, Sterle jumping ahead with a 7-5 first set victory. Romero rallied from there to take the next two sets for the match win.

At No. 3 singles, St. Scholastica's Scott Hawley (Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert HS) dropped the first set 3-6 to Andy McCarter but took the second set to even the match with a 7-5 win. McCarter came back in the third with a 6-3 win to capture the match.

The Saints have little time to recover as they are set to play the host Green Knights from St. Norbert in a match to follow the Vikings-Saints event.
