STEVENS POINT, Wis. – For the first time in St. Scholastica hockey history the Saints get a weekend sweep at both UW-Eau Claire and UW-Stevens Point as 15th-ranked CSS defeated its third straight ranked opponent tonight with a 2-1 win over ninth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point at Willett Arena.
The Saints improve to 9-3-1 overall and 4-2-0 in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA). The four NCHA wins match last year's total. The Pointers fall to 8-4-0 overall and 2-4-0 in the NCHA. The Saints are now 4-1-1 against ranked opponents this season.
The Saints took a 1-0 lead at the end of the first period when #Dustin DeGagne# (Jr.-Winnipeg, Man.) scored an even-handed goal with 23 seconds left in the period. #Jordan Baird# (Jr.-Port McNeill, B.C.) and #Jeff Gagnon# (Jr.-Quesnel, B.C.) had the assists. Both teams had nine shots on goal in the opening period.
The Saints extended their lead to 2-0 when Jordan Baird (Port McNeill, British Columbia/Victoria (BCHL)) scored a power-play goal at the 15:37-mark of the second period. #Trevor Gieger# (Sr.-Salmon Arm, B.C.) and Jeff Gagnon (Quesnel, British Columbia/Victoria (BCHL)) had the assists. Halfway through the second period, the Pointers cut the CSS lead in half when Sean Fish scored. Both teams had 14 shots in the second period.
The Pointers had a 12-8 shot advantage in the third period and had a power-play with six minutes to go in the game, but #Steve Bounds# (Sr.-Airdrie, Alta.) stopped all 12 shots in the period as the Saints prevailed 2-1. Bounds had 27 saves for his ninth win of the season.
Thomas Speer had 29 saves in the loss for Stevens Point. Both teams had four penalties in the game.
The Saints are now off until after the holidays when they will host Northland College in a non-conference contest at Mars Lakeview Arena on Saturday, January 3rd. The puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
