DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team hung with the University of Wisconsin-River Falls, but in the end the Falcons pulled away to a 65-55 victory tonight at Reif Gym.
The Saints fall to 2-8 overall, while the Falcons improve to 8-3. The Saints are now 8-14 all-time against the Falcons.
The Falcons got off to a quick start scoring the first nine points of the game. #Laura Amys# (Fr.-South Range, Wis./Superior) had a three-point play to put the Saints on the board at the 16:33-mark. River Falls extended its lead to 10, five minutes into the contest, but CSS went on an 8-2 run to cut the margin down to 15-11. The Saints then cut the lead down to two following a #Kirsten Haukom# (Jr.-Marshall, Minn.) lay-up with seven minutes to go in the half. However, the Falcons maintained the lead and had a 31-27 halftime edge.
The Saints shot 31-percent from the field in the half, and the Falcons shot 36-percent. River Falls also out-scored CSS 20-12 in the paint.
The Saints scored the first four points of the second half to tie it at 31-31. St. Scholastica then took its first lead of the game when #Katie Kimm# (So.-Mora, Minn.) drained a 3-pointer to make the score 38-35 with 16 minutes to play.
River Falls responded with a 6-0 run to go back up by three, but #Katie Christensen# (Jr.-Elk River, Minn.) hit a 3-pointer to tie it back up. There would be six total ties in the second half. With the score 47-47 with seven minutes to play, the Falcons would be called for a technical foul, but CSS could not capitalize missing both free throws and then making just one out of two free throws on the subsequent possession.
With the score 50-50, the Falcons went on a 7-0 run to go up 57-50 with four minutes to play. River Falls would not look back as it went on to win 65-55.
The Saints shot 31-percent from the field, while the Falcons shot 36-percent. The Falcons out-rebounded the Saints 55-36, including 24-12 on the offensive glass. The Falcons also had a 44-20 scoring edge in the paint.
Laura Amys (South Range, Wis./Superior HS) had a career-high 11 points off the bench to pace the Saints. Kirsten Haukom (Marshall, Minn./Marshall HS) was the only other Saint to score in double-figures with 10 points. Alise Holst had a double-double for the Falcons with a game-high 21 points and 12 rebounds.
The Saints will be at home again tomorrow afternoon when they square off with St. Olaf College in a non-conference contest. The action is set to begin at 2 p.m. in Reif Gym.
