DE PERE, Wis. – The St. Scholastica men's basketball team was defeated by Carthage College (Wis.) by a score of 73-63 tonight in the consolation game of the Nicolet National Bank Holiday Tournament at the Schuldes Sports Center.
The loss drops the Saints to 4-6 overall, while the Red Men improve to 7-3 this season. This was the first-ever meeting between the two programs.
#Kyle Allen# (Sr.-Black River Falls, Wis.) scored the first four points of the game on his way to a career-high 19 points. A #Bryan Johnson# (Fr.-Randolph, Wis.) 3-pointer gave CSS a 7-2 lead two minutes into the contest. The Red Men took their first lead following a lay-up to make the score 15-13 at the 11:43-mark.
St. Scholastica followed with a 7-0 run to regain the lead and go up by five with 9:45 left in the first half. However, in the final seven minutes of the half, Carthage went on a 13-3 run to take a 35-27 halftime lead.
The Saints shot 50-percent in the first half, but committed nine turnovers. The Red Men shot 48-percent and out-scored the Saints 12-0 on points off turnovers.
Carthage extended its lead to 10 in the second half, but the Saints went on a 12-2 run to tie the score at 45-45 with 12 minutes to play. St. Scholastica would not be able to get the lead back, but the margin was only two with 5:38 to play. However, the Red Men went on a 12-4 run to extend the lead back to 10 with a minute to play as the Carthage defeated the Saints 73-63.
CSS shot just 38-percent in the second half to finish at 43-percent for the game. The Red Men finished at 48-percent shooting for the game and were 18-for-21 from the free throw line. St. Scholastica out-rebounded Carthage 39-25, but committed nine more turnovers.
Allen led the Saints with a career-high 19 points. #Troy Miller# (Sr.-Stillwater, Minn.) finished with a double-double of 13 points and a career-high 16 rebounds. Steve Djurickovic led all-scorers with 28 points for Carthage.
The Saints remain in Wisconsin for their next contest at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire on Saturday. The tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Zorn Arena.
