ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team saw its season come to an end tonight with a 3-1 loss to Northwestern College in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament Championship.
The No. 1 seeded Eagles came out strong, getting the first four points of the match and then closing the first set on a 17-2 run to win by a score of 25-7. Northwestern had a .343 attack percentage in the first set, its best of the match.
The second set was tightly contested early as the score was 10-10 halfway through. However, the Eagles then went on a 9-3 run and went on to take a two-set lead 25-19. The Saints then trailed 21-19 in the third set, but they didn't want to end their season just yet as CSS scored the next five points and went on to force a fourth set by winning 25-22. The Saints had 13 kills in the set.
St. Scholastica would have a 9-4 lead in the fourth set, but the Eagles went on an 8-0 run to take and keep the lead the rest of the way as they took the fourth set by a score of 25-19. Northwestern earns its fifth UMAC Tournament Championship, but its first since the 2003 season.
#Dustie Richardson# (Sr.-Grand Rapids, Minn./Greenway) and #Amy Thompson# (Sr.-Onamia, Minn.) each had 10 kills to lead the Saints. #Caitlin Aten# (Fr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) had 29 set assists and #Cassie Roden# (Sr.-Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) 28 digs.
The Saints end with a record of 17-12. CSS will have to say goodbye to a great senior class of #Erin Niles# (Sr.-Grand Rapids, Minn.), Dustie Richardson (Grand Rapids, Minn./Greenway HS), Cassie Roden (Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS), Amy Thompson (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS), and #Shawna Varichak# (Sr.-Hibbing, Minn.).
