DULUTH, Minn. – #Jordan Chong# (Jr.-North Vancouver, B.C.) scored his second goal of the night to break a 2-2 tie in the third period as the St. Scholastica hockey team won its home opener over the Augsburg Auggies by a score of 3-2 at Mars Lakeview Arena.
The Saints improve to 2-1-1 this season and are currently on a three-game unbeaten streak, since losing the season opener at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. The Auggies drop to 0-2-0 overall as they have lost both of their games to Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) opponents.
It was Senior Night at Mars Lakeview, so CSS honored its 10 senior athletes and their parents before the contest. CSS struck first just five minutes in when Jordan Chong (North Vancouver, British Columbia/Dryden (SIJHL)) got the puck on the right side of the goal and put it in the net. #Trevor Geiger# (Sr.-Salmon Arm, B.C.) had the assist. The Auggies tied it up on the power play with 6:35 left in the first period when Nick Guran scored. The Saints had a 12-7 shot advantage in the opening period
Augsburg took the lead early in the second period when Bryan Fischmann scored a power-play goal just 21 seconds into the period to make the score 2-1. The Saints tied it back up halfway through the period when #Kyle Luschinski# (Sr.-Headingley, Man.) put the puck past the goaltender. Chong had the assist. The Auggies had a 14-8 shot advantage in the second period.
In the 13-minute mark of the of the third period it was Geiger and Chong hooking up again as Geiger put another puck right on the tape and Chong netted the game-winning goal. #Jeremy Dawes# (Fr.-Winnipeg, Man.) was also credited with an assist. The Auggies had a few power-plays late, but the Saints' penalty kill held the Auggies in check as CSS went on to win 3-2.
#Steve Bounds# (Sr.-Airdrie, Alta.) had 26 saves to improve to 2-1-1 this season. Andrew Kent had 29 saves in the loss for the Auggies. St. Scholastica out-shot Augsburg 32-28. The Auggies were 2-for-7 on the power-play, while the Saints were 0-for-5. There were 22 combined penalties in the contest.
The Saints will be at Mars Lakeview Arena again tomorrow night where they will host Hamline University. The action begins at 7:05 p.m.
