DULUTH, Minn. – After not defeating Northwestern College in the two matches during the regular season, the St. Scholastica men's soccer team won when it really counted, defeating the Eagles 2-0 this afternoon in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) semifinal match at Saints Field.

The Saints advance to the UMAC Championship match on Saturday where they will face the University of Minnesota-Morris, who needed overtime to get past Presentation College today. CSS improves to 15-4-2 overall, while the Eagles end their season with an 8-11-2 record.

The Saints may have played one of their better matches of the season today against Northwestern. CSS got its first goal in the 27th minute when goalkeeper #Sam Reed# (Fr.-Eastbourne, England/Causeway) caught a throw-in, quickly advanced it to #Brandon Stemwedel# (Fr.-Grand Rapids, Minn.), who led #Courtney Bonnick# (Fr.-Nottingham, England), who then had a breakaway and put ball inside the left post to make the score 1-0.

The Saints made the score 2-0 when Stemwedel struck a ball past the goalkeeper, far corner in the 56th minute. The CSS defense held it from there as it tied a program record with its 11th shutout this season.

The Saints had a 9-5 shot advantage in the match. Sam Reed (Eastbourne, England/Causeway School) had two saves in net for CSS. Danny King had five saves in the loss for the Eagles.

The UMAC Tournament Championship match will begin at 2 p.m. at Saints Field.
