SAINTS TAKE DOWN VIKINGS IN UMAC SEMIFINAL

DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica volleyball team continued its hot streak by sweeping Bethany Lutheran College tonight in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament semifinal match at Reif Gym.

The Saints move on to the UMAC Tournament championship where they will take on the No. 1 seed Northwestern College in St. Paul on Saturday night. The Saints have won six straight matches and 10 of the last 11. CSS has a record of 17-11. The Vikings' season ends with a record of 14-17 overall.

The Saints were looking to redeem themselves after losing to Bethany Lutheran in last year's semifinal match. CSS came out strong in front of a great crowd in Reif Gym. The Saints had an 8-1 lead in the first set and went on to win the set by a score of 25-11. CSS had a .478 attack percentage in the set.

The second set was close early as the score was tied 8-8. The Saints then went on a 7-3 run halfway through and took a two-set lead, winning 25-19. The Saints had a match-high 18 kills in the set. The Vikings had a 10-6 lead in the third set, but then St. Scholastica went on a 7-0 run to take a 13-10 lead. CSS held the lead the rest of the way and went on to win 25-17.

The Saints had 41 kills and a .347 attack percentage for the match. #Shawna Varichak# (Sr.-Hibbing, Minn.) had 10 kills to lead CSS. #Dustie Richardson# (Sr.-Grand Rapids, Minn./Greenway) added nine kills. #Caitlin Aten# (Fr.-Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Simley) had 32 set assists and #Cassie Roden# (Sr.-Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral) had 19 digs.

Next for the Saints is the UMAC Tournament Championship match on Saturday. They will face the No. 1 seed Northwestern College at 7 p.m. down in St. Paul.
