MENOMONIE, Wis. – The St. Scholastica women's basketball team was defeated by the Cardinal Stritch University (Wis.) Wolves this morning in the consolation game of the University of Wisconsin-Stout Super 8 Turkey Shootout at Johnson Fieldhouse.
The Saints are now 0-5 this season, while the Wolves, an NAIA school, improve to 5-3. CSS falls to 0-3 all-time against the Wolves. This was the first meeting since the 2000-01 season.
#Erin Morstad# (Fr.-Fergus Falls, Minn.) gave the Saints an early 2-0 with a jumper. The Wolves then scored the next 10 points and went up by as much as 18 points with 13 minutes to play in the first half. St. Scholastica went on a 14-4 run later in the half to cut the lead down to seven with five minutes to go. The margin got down to six with a little over three minutes to play, but the Wolves ended the half on a 12-3 run to take a 48-33 halftime lead.
The Wolves came out strong in the second half, out-scoring the Saints 20-4 in the first eight minutes to take a 68-37 lead. CSS scored just 13 points in the second half; including just two field goals in the final 10 minutes as Cardinal Stritch went on to win 84-46.
The Saints shot 36-percent for the game, while the Wolves shot 43-percent. Cardinal Stritch scored 34 points off of 31 CSS turnovers. The Wolves also out-scored the Saints 32-12 in the paint.
#Kirsten Haukom# (Jr.-Marshall, Minn.) had 11 points to lead the Saints in scoring for the third time this season. Freshman Erin Morstad (Fergus Falls, Minn./Fergus Falls HS) added nine points. #Katie Christensen# (Jr.-Elk River, Minn.) had a collegiate-high nine rebounds for CSS. Michelle Stelloh had a game-high 14 points for the Wolves.
The Saints are on the road on Tuesday when they will square off with North Central University in Minneapolis. The action is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
