SUPERIOR, Wis. – For the second time in nine days, the St. Scholastica men's basketball team was defeated by twin-port rival University of Wisconsin-Superior by a score of 87-68 at Mortorelli Gym.
The Saints fall to 1-3 overall this season and the Yellowjackets improve to 2-2 on the campaign. The Yellowjackets sweep the season series against the Saints after CSS swept both games last year.
A #Justin Nelson# (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./Marshall) free throw gave the Saints a 3-2 lead in the first minute of play, however, the Yellowjackets would then go on a 15-2 run over the next five minutes to take a 17-5 lead. #Troy Miller# (Sr.-Stillwater, Minn.) hit a layup to cut the margin down to eight with 12 minutes to play, but Superior out-scored the Saints 37-10 the final 11 minutes of the first half to take a 46-21 halftime advantage.
The Yellowjackets shot 66-percent in the half and had 22 points off of CSS turnovers. The Saints shot 41-percent in the half. Superior out-scored St. Scholastica 14-0 in second-chance points in the first half.
The Yellowjacket lead only got as low as 17 points in the second half as Superior went on to win by a score of 87-68.
The Saints shot 50-percent for the game, while the Yellowjackets finished at 61-percent. Troy Miller (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) had 16 points to lead CSS. Justin Nelson had 14 points and #Bryan Johnson# (Fr.-Randolph, Wis.) added 12 points. #Kyle Allen# (Sr.-Black River Falls, Wis.) had a team-high five rebounds. Jake Smith had a game-high 22 points for the Yellowjackets.
The Saints will be on the road again on Tuesday when they will face North Central University in Minneapolis. The tip-off is scheduled for approximately 7:30 p.m. following the women's game.
