PIPERS RALLY AND PULL AWAY LATE TO DEFEAT SAINTS

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The Hamline University Pipers rallied from eight points down in the second half and pulled away late to down the St. Scholastica men's basketball team 73-64 tonight at Hutton Arena.

The loss drops the Saints' record to 1-2 overall. The Pipers improve to 2-1 with the victory. The Saints fall to 4-6 against the Pipers all-time. Hamline has won three straight in the series.

It took three minutes until the first bucket was scored tonight. #Chris Hamers# (So.-Onamia, Minn.) hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Saints a 6-2 lead early. The Pipers then went on a 15-0 run over four minutes to go up 17-6.

The margin got as high as 12 until the Saints went on a 12-3 run to cut it down to three with six minutes left in the half. Freshman #Bryan Johnson# (Fr.-Randolph, Wis.) had eight points in the rally. The Pipers extended their lead back up to eight with 2:44 left, but CSS finished the half strong, going on a 10-0 run to take a 35-33 lead at the break. #Troy Miller# (Sr.-Stillwater, Minn.) had six of the ten points.

Johnson had 12 points off the bench in the first half to lead CSS. The Saints shot 45-percent from the field in the half, while the Pipers shot 52-percent. St. Scholastica was 6-for-13 from beyond the arc in the half.

The Saints extended their lead to eight, two minutes into the second half. However, Hamline chipped away and regained the lead with 12:37 left in the game. A Bryan Johnson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph HS) 3-pointer put the Saints back ahead with 8:23 to go.

A #Justin Nelson# (Sr.-Duluth, Minn./Marshall) jumper tied the score at 60-60 with 4:24 remaining. The Pipers then scored eight straight points, capped off with back-to-back 3-pointers. The Pipers went 5-for-6 from the free throw line in the final minute to seal the victory by a final score of 73-64.

The Saints shot 45-percent for the game and hit nine 3-pointers for the game. Hamline shot 49-percent and answered with 10, 3-pointers. The Pipers were 19-for-22 from the free throw line, while the Saints were just 7-for-9. The Piper bench out-scored the CSS bench 47-22.

Chris Hamers (Onamia, Minn./Onamia HS) had a collegiate-high 17 points for St. Scholastica. Bryan Johnson (Randolph, Wis./Randolph HS) added 15 points off the bench. #Jesse Taylor# (Sr.-Superior, Wis./Maranatha Academy) had 12 points and Troy Miller (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) had 11 points. Miller and Taylor both had a team-high six rebounds and Miller had five assists to lead the Saints. Tony Thrasher and Eric Clute each had 10 points to pace the Pipers.

The Saints return to the twin ports and will head over the bridge to face the University of Wisconsin-Superior for the second time this season on Saturday. The tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
